Athletics
At the Jason Horowitz Academy of Mathematics, we take a holistic approach to education—one that values not only intellectual growth but also physical activity, teamwork, and resilience. While our core focus is mathematics, we recognize the importance of movement, strategy, and camaraderie in shaping well-rounded students. Our athletics program gives students the opportunity to apply the same focus, discipline, and creativity that they bring to problem-solving in a competitive and collaborative sports environment.
Fencing Team
Fencing is the Academy’s most established athletic program, and for good reason—it combines strategy, agility, and mental focus in every bout. The fencing team includes students at all levels, from those new to the sport to experienced competitors with national rankings. Practices are held weekly and focus on footwork, blade work, and tactical decision-making across all three weapons: foil, epee, and sabre.
Our team members not only compete at local and regional tournaments but also take pride in mentoring each other. Senior fencers often help run drills and offer guidance during practice, fostering a supportive, student-led learning environment. For many of our students, fencing has become a natural complement to mathematics. Both require anticipation, quick thinking, and a deep understanding of structure and pattern.
Pickleball Team
What began as a casual after-school activity quickly evolved into one of the most popular athletic offerings at the Academy. The pickleball team brings students together for fast-paced, strategic gameplay that’s accessible to beginners but offers plenty of depth for more competitive players.
Practices are held at nearby outdoor courts, and the team participates in informal matches with other schools and community clubs. Pickleball emphasizes hand-eye coordination, court awareness, and sharp reflexes—but just as importantly, it builds teamwork and trust. Doubles matches in particular give students a chance to work together under pressure, communicate effectively, and support one another through quick rallies and long games.
